So who or what is a Cultural Cailin?
Well, I am! My name is Lori, I’m from Ireland and I’m a 22 year old Cailín (the Irish word for a girl) who likes all things Cultural. Hence, I am a Cultural Cailín. Or so I like to think anyways.
I recently graduated from the University of Limerick in Ireland with a BA in Applied Languages, which has been fundamental in all things culture, language and travel in my life over the past 5 or so years. It is also the reason I first moved abroad, initially to Tenerife for my Cooperative Education Placement and then to Brussels for Erasmus, setting me up to later go on and live in places like New York, Quito, Nice, and currently in Tallinn.
I feel so fortunate to have been able to live in these places and to encounter all of the amazing cultures that I have, learning new languages and meeting new people everywhere I go. Living abroad and backpacking on a regular basis since I left home at 17 has been amazing, but despite all of my experiences, on some of my shorter trips I have always left feeling that, though I may have seen the sights, had a great time and perhaps gotten a feel for a country or a city, I had missed out on something important.
Living abroad, I have learned that moving to a country, becoming a local, living, sleeping and breathing the country and its’ culture as opposed to just visiting it, can really be the gateway to understanding, and it can be a much more enriching experience. So that is what I have decided to do. Though I will continue my travels, I have decided to dedicate a lot more time for long term stays in as many countries as possible.
If you think this sounds interesting, or you are just nosy and want to see what I’m up to, you can find my travel and expat stories in all their guts and glory here on my website or on my Facebook here and Instagram here. You can also follow me on Snapchat @lorainnegavin, for a no holds barred view of what life living abroad (currently in Tallinn, Estonia) is really like. I look forward to sharing my journey with you.
